Grad Student Assistantships & Internships

Calendar

To be competitive in an ever-changing job market, graduate students in today’s humanities fields need experiential learning opportunities in addition to their research training. UT Humanities graduate students have an opportunity to hone their skills in communications and outreach through graduate assistantships and internships offered at the UT Humanities Center.

Graduate students in all of the nine departments represented by the Humanities Center receive invitations to apply and are interviewed through a formal application process.

In addition to their pay, interns and GRAs are assigned an office of their own at the UT Humanities Center for the run of the internship, have access to all Center facilities and amenities, and meet weekly with staff to oversee specific programs and outreach activities.

Past internships have included the following foci:

  • The “Humanities Media and Communications” intern works with the UTHC staff on communications, including maintenance of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, writing and distribution of publicity materials and special interest stories, website maintenance, and other media communications tasks.
  • The “Humanities Programs Development” position gives training in advising to student groups and developing graduate and undergraduate student initiatives at the Center.

We are grateful to the College of Arts and Sciences for and the Office of Research, Innovation, and Eonomic Development (ORIED) for funding these positions.

Those seeking more information about the UT Humanities Center graduate student employment opportunities should contact the Center at 974-4222 or humanitiesctr@utk.edu.

Tenth in Fellowships

1.5 Years Sooner

Graduate students chosen to spend a year in the UTHC working on their dissertations graduate, on average, 1.5 years sooner, publish their first book sooner, and receive better job offers than other students in the humanities.

Greater Faculty Impact

Faculty who spend a year at the University of Tennessee win NEH and other awards and publish award-winning books and research projects more quickly.
