Exploring the past, the present, and the possible.

Welcome to the Denbo Center at the University of Tennessee. We support innovative arts and humanities research and advocate for the essential role of the arts and humanities in our world today. Representing 9 departments in the UT College of Arts and Sciences, the Denbo Center promotes interdisciplinary public conversation and research concerned with the academic, social, and cultural issues central to human flourishing.

On the left is a painting depicting the practice of metallurgy in the Kingdom of Kongo by Giovanni Cavazzi da Montecuccolo, c. 1650, showing Black men and women working a bellows and hammering while others look on. On the right is a portrait of early modern naturalist and botanist Maria Merian in her study.

Groundbreaking Research

The Denbo Center at the University of Tennessee supports the research and interdisciplinary collaborations necessary to address essential questions in the arts and humanities through faculty and graduate student year-long research fellowships, interdisciplinary research seminars, grants, publication support, and more.
