The UT Humanities Center is a vibrant research center that develops wide-ranging, public impact, and interdisciplinary arts and humanities programming and supports humanistic research excellence on the UT campus. To offer UT graduate students training in humanities programs administration, we wish to hire an advanced graduate student as a GRA. The position offers workforce training in humanities center administration, working in teams, and public programming. The GRA position involves occasional night and weekend work. The candidate will be given a workspace at the Center and access to Center facilities and be included at all UTHC events for the year.
This position is for academic year 2024-2025 (fall 2024 and spring 2025) and is available starting August 10, 2024. Duties will be performed primarily off campus at the UT Humanities Center’s location at Cherokee Mills on Sutherland Avenue, as well as on-campus as needed for events and other tasks.
Responsibilities and Duties
Potential job assignments include working closely with the UTHC Director and staff on activities such as the following:
- Assisting with planning, logistics, recruiting, and staffing of events, including those specifically designed for graduate students
- Handling event correspondence and coordinating meetings
- Working with UTHC staff on event publicity, preparing support materials for events, posting publicity materials, and helping with events setup and breakdown
- Data gathering about events and programs
- Possibly assisting with video/audio production and editing and gathering of assets for website
- Other duties as needed
Because this is a GRA appointment with the aim of “alt-ac” workforce development, at the end of the assistantship the GRA will submit a report/paper outlining duties and tasks performed and the relation to career goals, research productivity, and future research activities. The student also will work with the UTHC supervisor to determine how to present this work at professional conferences or publishing outlets.
Required Qualifications
Competitive candidates will have the following qualifications:
- Full-time enrollment as a UT graduate student during AY 2024-25
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word applications and Outlook calendar
- Ability to oversee communications and planning for public events in collaboration with UTHC staff
- Ability to assess and suggest new activities and events related to graduate student needs
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision but also be a constructive and cooperative member of a team
- Ability to work evenings as required and to attend most UTHC events
- Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in programs and work teams, with the ability to navigate a variety of social contexts
- Ability to perform moderate physical work and to commute on bus between UTK campus and Cherokee Mills
- High standards of professionalism
- Excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Strong work ethic, dependability, and organizational skills.
Compensation
This is a 9-month, 50% assistantship (20 hours per week) that pays a $25,868 stipend with full tuition waiver, health insurance, and fees.
