American Academy in Rome Affiliated Fellowship

Since 2010 the University of Tennessee, Knoxville has provided an annual affiliated fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. For four weeks in May or June, the UT affiliated fellow becomes a full member of the scholarly and artistic community at the American Academy, with all of the opportunities and privileges of Rome Prize fellows and affiliated fellows from other institutions.

Affiliated Fellows receive housing (single room with private bath), meals on the same plan as Rome Prize Fellows, the opportunity to sign up for Academy trips and tours, invitations to Academy events, and access to Academy scholarly resources including the Library, Photographic Archive and the Archaeological Study Collection.

For this fellowship, the Office of Research and Engagement will cover four weeks of residential costs, including room and board. The fellow’s department and college are responsible for covering travel expenses.

The UT affiliated fellowship is available to all tenured and tenure-track UT faculty members in fields eligible for a Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome. Lecturers in eligible fields may also apply if they have served as full-time members of their department for at least five consecutive academic years prior to the academic year of application. Graduate students are not eligible.

Fields in the arts: Architecture, Design, Historic Preservation and Conservation, Landscape Architecture, Musical Composition, and Visual Arts

Fields in the humanities: Ancient Studies, Medieval Studies, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies, and Modern Italian Studies. These chronological fields may pertain to any discipline in the humanities.

Applications in other fields in the humanities and the arts that are consistent with the expectations and standards of the Rome Prize may be considered at the discretion of the selection committee.

A selection committee of UT faculty members will choose the UT affiliated fellow based on the quality of the proposed project and the quality and promise of previous work. In addition, projects that indicate an intellectual or practical rationale for residence in Rome will receive some preference, as will applicants who have previously applied for the Rome Prize.

The applicant must submit the following to Alan Rutenberg in the following order in one pdf file:

• Cover page, including the name, department, and college of the applicant, the title of the proposal, and the dates of any previous applications for the Rome Prize
• Project proposal (maximum of two double spaced pages) describing a current humanities or arts project and the related work the applicant intends to undertake in Rome.
• Current curriculum vitae

Two reference letters must be sent directly to Alan Rutenberg.
