The Denbo Center Collaborates with the National Humanities Center

November 4, 2025

  • This summer (2025) the Denbo Center sent two fellows to complete residencies at the National Humanities Center housed in UNC-Chapel Hill. Brooke Bauer, PhD (Department of History) used the faculty residency to focus on completing a book manuscript co-authored with Denise E. Bates, PhD (Tufts), tentatively titled Interpreting the Indigenous South: Tribal Nations Confronting Race and Erasure in the U.S. Southeast. Camren Murray, a doctoral candidate in the Department of History, participated in the graduate student residency.

“The most important takeaway from my participation in the residency,” Bauer noted, “was a reminder of the significance of writing in solitude and building a global network of scholars.” Likewise, Murray remarked, “Networking! You know how sometimes it feels like just a word people say with no real meaning behind it? It is actually legit. Since I’ve returned home, I’ve had about two cohort members send me fellowship and other funding opportunities that they’ve applied to and have gotten. Additionally, I’ve made some lifelong friends. I’m so glad I came.”
